        If These Walls Could Talk

What would the walls say about the lives of women, if they came alive in the same location in 1940, 1980 and 2020?

If These Walls Could Talk was an outreach and performance project, which took play in January - March 2020.

‘This project taught me a lot about women. I think one of the most valuable things I gained from this project was hearing other people's stories and really learning about the challenges and positives facing women today and throughout history.’

        More Details

If These Walls Could Talk was a project which came together for an International Women's Day Special at the Bristol Improv Theatre. It involved bringing together a group of 11 women for an 8 week rehearsal process where we researched the lives of women over the past one hundred years, the stories of inspirational women and developed our improv and storytelling skills, focusing on authentic conversation-based scene work. The format concept was generously shared by Amy Moule of Impro Melbourne and involved scenes set in the same location in the years 1920, 1980 and 2020.

‘As a women I do feel that I have restrictions in how I am allowed to communicate. From society, the patriarchy, self-imposed. And I think much of the time we maybe don't realise that we are sort of restricted in this way until we do something like improv and feel what it's like not to be’

        - Participant

We invited the audience to share stories and memories of women who inspired them via paper 'bricks' which we then stuck on a 'wall' in the bar. These inspired conversations and stories the cast had which then fed into the scenes set in the eras.

‘an enjoyable re-centring of expectations (of improv)....Meaning bubbles naturally, rising and falling with the wavering enthusiasm you might hear from conversation in the kitchen’
